Top 10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting IVF

Starting IVF can feel like stepping into a world you never expected to be part of. There’s so much information and yet, so many things no one tells you. Whether you’re just beginning to explore assisted reproduction or you’re already deep in it, this list is here to offer the honest, supportive insights I wish I had from day one.

1. IVF is physically and emotionally demanding - give yourself grace.

From hormone injections to ultrasounds and the emotional weight of outcomes, IVF is no small thing. Build in time to rest, cry, process, and recover.

2. Your body needs time to prepare not just respond.

Egg quality, sperm health, and uterine receptivity can all be supported 2–3 months before a cycle. Start nourishing and preparing early, especially through diet and targeted supplements.

3. There’s no shame in needing support.

Whether it's naturopathy, acupuncture, therapy, or support groups this journey isn’t meant to be done alone.

4. The mental load is real and invisible.

Managing appointments, decisions, medications, results... it adds up. Writing things down, having a flexible plan, and asking for help can protect your mental space.

5. Your partner may cope differently and that’s okay.

Not everyone expresses emotions the same way. Open communication (and grace for each other’s process) can make a big difference.

6. Post-retrieval recovery matters.

Egg collection is a medical procedure. You may need a few days to recover, and your vaginal microbiome and overall system may benefit from targeted support.

7. A “failed” cycle still gives you data.

It hurts. But it also provides insight on hormone levels, egg response, embryo development. You’re not starting from zero next time.

8. Supplements aren’t one-size-fits-all.

What works for one person might not be right for another. A personalised, practitioner-guided approach can be more effective and safer.

9. It’s okay to set boundaries around advice and questions.

Well-meaning friends and family may not understand what you're going through. You’re allowed to protect your space.

10. You are not broken and you are not alone.

Needing help to conceive doesn't make you less. You're still whole, still worthy, and still deeply strong.
