Supporting Children’s Health Naturally: A Naturopathic Approach

Childhood is a period of rapid growth, development and change. From the introduction of solids and navigating toddler eating, through to childcare illnesses, digestive concerns, skin health and nutritional needs, each stage can bring new questions for parents.

Much of my work has centred around supporting women through preconception, pregnancy and postpartum. It has been a natural extension of this work to also support the babies and children who come next. There is something very special about being able to support a family from preparing for pregnancy through to those early years of childhood.

Naturopathic care takes a whole child approach, considering nutrition, lifestyle, medical history, development and the individual needs of each child.

Why the early years matter

The early years provide an important foundation for growth and development. Nutritional requirements change rapidly, the immune system continues to develop, eating habits begin to form and children are increasingly exposed to new environments as they enter childcare, kinder and school.

Children are also not simply small adults. Their nutritional needs, developmental stage, diet, medical history and family environment all need to be considered when assessing their health.

Rather than focusing solely on an individual symptom, naturopathic care considers the broader picture and looks at factors that may be contributing to a child’s health concerns.

What can children’s naturopathy support?

Parents may seek naturopathic support for a specific health concern or simply want guidance around their child’s nutrition and general wellbeing.

Areas that may be supported include:

  • Recurrent illness and immune health.

  • Digestive concerns and constipation.

  • Eczema and skin health.

  • Food allergies and intolerances.

  • Fussy or restrictive eating.

  • Nutritional deficiencies.

  • Starting solids and early childhood nutrition.

  • Sleep.

  • Energy and general wellbeing.

  • Nutrition during periods of rapid growth.

Naturopathic care is designed to work alongside appropriate medical care. Where a concern requires further medical assessment or investigation, referral to your child’s GP or another relevant healthcare professional may be recommended.

What happens during a Children’s Health consultation?

A Children’s Initial Consultation is 60 minutes, allowing time to build a comprehensive picture of your child’s health.

Depending on your child’s age and reason for attending, we may discuss pregnancy and birth history, breastfeeding or formula feeding, introduction of solids, current diet, appetite, digestion, bowel habits, sleep, immune health, allergies, medications and supplements, growth and development, and relevant medical and family history.

For older children, we may also explore their eating patterns, school routine, physical activity, energy and other lifestyle factors.

Existing pathology can be reviewed and, where clinically appropriate, further investigation may be discussed.

Recommendations are individualised to your child and may include practical dietary changes, nutritional support, lifestyle recommendations and supplementation or herbal medicine where appropriate.

A food first approach

Nutrition is an important part of my approach to children’s health.

A child’s diet can change enormously from one stage to another. A toddler who once ate everything may suddenly become selective. A child starting childcare may seem to pick up every illness circulating. Another child may avoid particular foods or entire food groups because of taste, texture or preference.

Rather than looking at one meal or one difficult week, I consider the overall dietary pattern.

Are they eating adequate protein? Are there good sources of iron? Are essential fats being included? Is there enough variety? Are there potential nutritional gaps? Could something be affecting appetite or digestion?

Supplements can have a place when appropriate, but they do not automatically need to be the starting point for every child.

Practical support for real families

Supporting a child’s health also means considering what is realistic for the whole family.

Feeding, sleep and frequent illness can affect the whole household, and parents are often trying to make health decisions while balancing work, childcare, siblings and their own wellbeing.

Recommendations therefore need to be practical and achievable.

There is little value in creating the “perfect” nutritional plan if it doesn’t work for your family or your child simply won’t eat it.

The aim is to help parents better understand their child’s health, identify areas where additional support may be beneficial and provide realistic recommendations that can be implemented at home.
